In 1835 Alexis de Tocquevile published Democracy in America in which he expressed concerns about democracy in America.
He feared that public opinion would become an all-powerful, tyrannical force.
I ask you, who controls public opinion?
He stated the "the majority represses not only all contest, but all controversy. I know no country in which there is so little true independence of mind and freedom of discussion as America.
